How to Open Your Honda Key Fob & Replace the Battery

Honda key fob

Your new Honda car, truck, or SUV comes with a key fob that can conveniently lock and unlock your car doors, remotely start the engine, activate memory seat settings, and more. All of these features are powered by the Honda key battery, which will eventually run out of juice over time and need to be replaced. Learn how to change the battery in a Honda key fob and how to program a Honda key in this guide from the service team at Weir Canyon Honda.

Choosing the Right Honda Key Fob Battery

The Honda key fob uses a flat, circular 3-volt battery which can be found at most Irvine-area hardware stores. You can also visit the Weir Canyon Honda Parts Center where we always have Honda key fob batteries in stock. You can even order a Honda key battery from us online, and we’ll have it ready for you to pick up at our dealership in Anaheim at your convenience.

Honda Key Fob Battery Replacement

Ready to learn how to change the battery in a Honda key fob? The following steps will show how to open a Honda key fob, how to remove/replace the battery, and how to put the key fob back together:

  1. Press and slide the button that releases the metal key, and then slide the key out.
  2. Use the key or a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry the key fob open.
  3. Press your thumb down right above the battery to hold the fob together so the contents and external buttons don’t fall out.
  4. Remove the dead battery, taking note of the positive and negative sides in order to install the new battery correctly. Don’t touch the terminals on the new battery. The oils on your skin can cause corrosion, which shortens battery life.
  5. Insert the new battery in the same position as the old one. Use the positive (+) and negative (-) marks inside the key fob as a guide.
  6. Align the two halves of the key fob and gently apply pressure until they snap back together.

Some older Honda key fobs have a screw that holds the two halves together instead of a button. If this is the case with your key fob, use a small flathead screwdriver to remove the screw, and then follow the steps above to replace the battery.

How to Program a Honda Key

Now that you know how to change a Honda key battery, you’ll want to find out how to program it. The following steps demonstrate how to program a Honda key:

  1. Enter the vehicle, make sure all the doors are shut and have your key and the fobs to be programmed ready.
