What Is Lane Departure Warning?

2019 Honda Pilot Sensing Banner

An innovative Honda safety feature, Lane Departure Warning (LDW) is designed to help drivers avoid possible collisions caused by drifting out of their lane. LDW is a part of the Honda Sensing® safety suite which is standard on most new Honda models and offered in others. In this guide from Weir Canyon Honda, you can learn more about Lane Departure Warning and how it can add an extra level of confidence to your Yorba Linda commute.

How Does LDW Work?

The LDW system uses cameras mounted near the rearview mirror to detect lane markings. When the wheels of your vehicle move past the lane marker, a flashing indicator and beeping alert will warn you to move back into your lane. In some cases, the steering wheel and even seat will vibrate to ensure you’re aware that the vehicle is drifting, so you can act to safely move back into your lane. The Lane Departure Warning system can help to prevent collisions from:

  • A vehicle sticking out too far in an adjoining lane
  • Sideswiping
  • A rollover
  • And more

In most models equipped with Honda Sensing®, the LDW system is automatically activated when you start the vehicle. In some models, LDW may need to be activated by pushing a button. Also, it is important to note that this system will not send you an alert or warning if you use your turn signal before crossing the lane marker.

Lane Departure Warning Options

There are a few different system warning/alert options to choose from, including:

  • Adjustable audible warning levels
  • Haptic feedback warnings like seat and wheel vibrations
  • Visual alerts with a flashing lane marking symbol
  • The ability to disable the system
  • Highway’s edge recognition

Not only will you be safe on the Irvine streets, but also on the highway when you customize the system to send warnings way that works best for you.

Honda Sensing® Features

In addition to Lane Departure Warning, Tustin drivers can enjoy the protection of several other advanced Honda Sensing® safety features such as:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
  • Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)
  • Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM)
